Alternative imaging methods include X-Ray, Ultrasound and even Nuclear Medicine Imaging:
- X-Ray‘s passing through the human body are attenuated differently by bone and soft tissue.
The different attenuation is used to create an image on film or detector
- Ultrasound waves are reflected by the tissue borders, while the runtime differences are the basis for
creating ultrasound images
- Nuclear medicine imaging produces images by detecting radiation from the human body
A molecule involved in our metabolism is modified by replacing one atom with a radiating atom. A gamma camera
which is sensitive to the radiation of the irradiated atom is then used to capture and create the image
All the above imaging takes place in the
„spatial domain“– as in photography

MR Imaging, however, takes place in the „frequency domain“ which of course, we are unable to visualize
In MRI, radiowaves (VHF) are transmitted into the human body and in turn, the human body emits radiowaves
which are measured using very sensitive antennae, (coils). These radio signals are the basis for the
calculation of cross sectional images
